So you're thinking about buying a Hooga mat?

Read this short guide before you buy.

$699 for a PEMF mat with infrared heat sounds like the sensible choice. Maybe it came up in a review, or a friend recommended it. But you're wondering what you give up at that price, and whether it fits the way you want to use it.

My name is Jan, and I'm the founder of Elvari. We make a similar mat. This is an honest take on what the Hooga mat does really well, and what our mat does differently, if you're looking for an alternative.

What Hooga gets right

I like Hooga. They started with red-light panels, they have half a million customers, and their PEMF mat page reads like it was written by an engineer with a conscience: no miracle language, clear safety notes, and a frank "this is not a red-light mat." Six PEMF cores, manual frequencies, and a three-year warranty for $699 is a strong offer.

If you're dealing with any of these, a therapy mat like the one Hooga offers could be a really good solution for you:

  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Stress that follows you into the evening
  • Chronic pain, a stiff back or achy joints
  • Sore, tense muscles after training or a long day
  • Cold hands and feet, and a body that craves deep warmth

What to look for in a good therapy mat

  • The offer. Compare price, guarantee and warranty, and check what is actually in the box.
  • How the therapies are made. Frequency range, number of coils and number of LEDs decide what you really get from PEMF, heat and light.
  • How the mat is built. Size, weight, surface and how easily it folds away after use.
  • The current under your body. Most mats run 110 volts of alternating current through the heating layer, so you lie in an alternating electric and magnetic field for an hour at a time. Check what powers the mat before you buy.

Hooga wins on price, clearly, and gives you a longer warranty and a longer return window. Where I'd look twice: with a 60-day return, Hooga deducts the return shipping, which adds up on a 24-lb box. We give you 30 days and pay the label.

The therapies

What the mat actually does
Hooga PEMF Mat Elvari 3-in-1
PEMF 1–50 Hz8 presets, manual 1–30 Hz PEMF 1–999 Hz in 0.1 Hz stepsplus 122 programs
6 PEMF coils 29 PEMF coils across the whole mat
PEMF 20 minutes on, 40 minutes offfive cycles, or 30-minute shut-off PEMF runs as long as your timer
No red lightseparate, higher-priced model 60 red-light LEDs (660 nm)
No near-infrared light 29 near-infrared LEDs (850 nm)
Far-infrared heat, 86–158 °Fheat timer 1–12 h Far-infrared heat, 86–158 °F, adjustable by the degree
5.5 lb amethyst and 5.5 lb tourmaline Natural crystal layer

Six coils on a 73-inch mat means the pulses sit in six spots. Twenty-nine means they reach your shoulders, your back, your hips and your calves at the same time. Add the light that Hooga leaves out, and you have most of the $500 explained before we even get to the power supply.

Hooga's 24 lb is a real advantage if the mat travels between rooms. Ours is heavier because of the crystal layer and the DC heating system. Mains AC versus direct current is the one line here that no budget changes.

Direct current: the difference you can't see

Almost every PEMF and infrared mat runs mains power straight into the heating layer. You lie on 110 volts of alternating current, switching direction 60 times a second, for an hour at a time.

When we developed the current generation in Germany, we moved the transformer off the mat. A compact adapter stays at the wall outlet, and everything under your body runs on 36 volts of direct current. There is no alternating field and no mains hum in the heating wire. The only field on the mat is the pulse you switch on.

It is also why the controller can tune frequencies to a tenth of a hertz. A DC controller is a precision instrument, not a dimmer switch.

Common questions and answers

Is the Hooga PEMF mat good?

Yes. For $699 it's the mat I'd recommend to anyone who wants to try PEMF and far-infrared heat without spending four figures. It has no light and a fifth of our coil count, and it runs on mains AC. That's where the price difference comes from.

Does Hooga have a mat with red light?

Yes, a separate model, the Red Light PEMF Mat, at a higher price. The mat compared here is the standard PEMF Mat with Infrared Heat, which Hooga itself describes as "not a red-light mat."

Why does the Elvari mat weigh more?

Because of the crystal layer, the 29 coils with their LEDs and the DC heating system. 35 lb is still eight pounds lighter than the HigherDOSE Pro, and the mat folds in three and has carrying handles on the back.
