So… you're looking to buy an amethyst or crystal mat?
Read this short insider guide before you decide.
Amethyst, jade, tourmaline: crystal mats come with a lot of stones and very few numbers. Prices run from under $600 to over $2,000, and the devil's in the details: most brands don't tell you how much stone you get, how hot the mat gets or what happens if you send it back.
My name is Jan, and as the founder of Elvari, I'm something of an expert on the topic. We make one of the mats on this list, so I can give you the insider knowledge on what to look for. I do my best to keep this comparison objective and neutral by reading every brand's own product, warranty and return pages and sticking to the facts.
What to look for in a good crystal mat
- Which stones, and how much. Does the brand name the crystals and their weight?
- Size. Does it cover you from head to calves, or is it a pad for your back?
- Heat. Is the temperature range published, and in how many steps?
- What else it does. Heat and stones only, or PEMF and red light as well?
- The fine print. Who pays for a return, is there a restocking fee, and how long is the warranty?

Questions people ask
What is the best amethyst mat?
It depends on what you want besides the stones. If you want crystals plus PEMF and light, running on direct current, we think it's the Elvari 3-in-1, and we're biased. For the most amethyst and an FDA clearance, it's the BioMat. For the lowest price on a mat that names its stone weights, it's MediCrystal. For amethyst plus PEMF under $700, it's Hooga.
Amethyst, jade or tourmaline: what's the difference?
In a heating mat, all three do the same job: they sit on top of the heating layer, warm up, store the heat and give it off evenly as far-infrared. Amethyst is the classic, jade is the traditional stone of Korean heat beds, and black tourmaline is often mixed in with the others. What each stone means to you beyond the warmth is your choice; we don't make claims about it.
Does more amethyst make a better mat?
More stone holds more heat and makes the mat heavier: BioMat lists 21 lb of stones, HigherDOSE 20 lb, MediCrystal 14 lb. What you feel is mostly the temperature and how evenly it spreads, and that depends just as much on the heating layer underneath.
Why doesn't Elvari publish its stone weight?
Because we built the mat around heat, PEMF and light, and the crystal layer is one of several layers. If the stone weight is your deciding number, BioMat and MediCrystal publish theirs, and we'd rather you buy the mat that fits than the one we sell.
Are Healthy Wave and HealthyLine the same?
Healthy Wave's own product pages say its mats are manufactured by HealthyLine, and its model codes match HealthyLine's. Prices, warranty and return terms differ, so compare the two offers side by side before you buy.
Are amethyst mats FDA approved?
None is FDA-approved. The BioMat is FDA-cleared through a 510(k) as a powered heating pad. "FDA registered", a phrase many crystal mats use, means the company or factory is registered with the FDA, not that the FDA reviewed the mat. The Elvari mat is sold as a wellness device.
